Tracking Environmental Progress
The annual tracking surveys were submitted to paper manufacturers, book printers and book publishers. While these surveys focused primarily on the use of recycled fiber and third party certified papers, there are also questions regarding corporate policies and practice
The Tracking Committee will also administer longer surveys every 5 years which will include additional questions required to calculate the industry's carbon footprint (for example, questions about office energy use and travel).
Only aggregate results for the industry and for each sector are reported, and the BIEC will guarantee confidentiality of all data gathered from survey participants.
In 2008, Green Press Initiative and the Book Industry Study Group released Environmental Trends and Climate Impacts: Findings from the U.S. Book Industry. This groundbreaking report provided the first comprehensive analysis of the U.S. book industry?s environmental impacts and carbon footprint. It is the goal of the BIEC Tracking Committee to conduct annual surveys to monitor how key environmental metrics have changed since the first environmental trends report, and to continue to do so annually. The BIEC has developed annual tracking surveys that primarily focus on paper/fiber sourcing as well as environmental policies. Every five years the BIEC will conduct more in-depth surveys that will allow for the full carbon footprint of the U.S. book industry to be calculated. Continuously evaluating the book industry's progress on environmental issues will help the BIEC identify where the industry has been most successful and where future efforts should be focused.
