Proposals Overview

Since June of 2008, the members of the council have focused on these priorities:

  1. Developing a means of tracking the industry’s environmental progress
  2. Setting an industry wide goal for reducing impacts on climate change
  3. Investigating stategy for reducing returns & increasing recovery

The BIEC has setup a working group to explore the role that the council could play in identifying and reducing the impacts of e-books.

Subcommittees have developed proposals to address each of the priorities. Details of each proposal are available by clicking the links above.

One of the original priorities of the BIEC was to develop an eco-logo that could identify publishers that were leaders in reducing environmental impacts. The council invested significant time and resources towards developing a certification system and a scorecard to evaluate publishers’ environmental performance. In the end the BIEC decided to discontinue work on the Eco label in part because there was disagreement among some publisher about the value of the certification and the criteria on which they would be evaluated. Green Press Initiative, believing that there was significant value in what had been developed decided to move ahead with a publisher certification independently, though many of the metrics included in the original BIEC scorecard are included in the Green Press Initiative Certification.
